Detalles del tsunami en Samoa

Un tsunami con olas de más de tres metros arrasó varios pueblos en las islas Samoa, luego de un terremoto de 8,3 grados en la escala de Richter. Hay al menos cinco muertos, aunque se desconoce el número de desaparecidos. Las autoridades, en simultáneo, lanzaron alertas para Nueva Zelanda, Hawai y la Polinesia francesa.

El sismo tuvo epicentro a unos 200 kilómetros al suroeste de Samoa y unos 85 kilómetros de profundidad. "Aquí hubo pánico porque los niños se encontraban camino al colegio y los adultos estaban yendo a sus trabajos", dijo un corresponsal desde Apia, la capital de Samoa, en contacto con la radio pública neocelandesa.

Según voceros, el tsunami provocó importantes daños materiales. Por ahora no hay reportes oficiales sobre víctimas. "Basados en todos los datos disponibles, el terremoto puede haber generado un tsunami que podría ser destructivo en las áreas costeras incluso alejadas del epicentro", indicó un especialista estadounidense.

El Instituto Geológico de EE.UU. había emitido tras el sismo una alerta de tsunami para el Pacífico Sur, dirigida en particular a Nueva Zelanda, las islas Fiji, la Polinesia francesa y Tonga.

Posteriormente se emitieron avisos para las islas Marshall, Salomón, Vanautu y Nauru. También hay avisos para Nueva Caledonia, Papúa Nueva Guinea, Australia y otras islas del Pacífico.
